The Roosters Youth Rugby Club has done a few different rugby-in-schools programs in the DMV. All of them focus on introducing students to rugby in a fun, inclusive and safe non-contact environment. Look at the different options we propose and don't hesitate to contact us to learn more!
We can bring students together for an interactive introduction to rugby for 30-45 mins. Coaches and players briefly introduce the sport, demonstrate passing, running, kicking and basic rugby movement, and then involve students in a few simple activities. We finish with a short touch-rugby demonstration and Q&A.
We work with the PE teachers throughout the school day. Students participate during their normal PE periods, with activities adapted to their age level. A typical session includes a short introduction, rugby skills and games, followed by a simple touch/tag-rugby activity. This format allows students to actually experience playing rugby rather than simply watching a demonstration.
If the school is interested in something more involved, we develop a short rugby unit that culminates in a school Rugby Day or mini-tournament. We work with students during PE and then finished the program with a grade-level rugby tournament. It's wonderful way to introduce the sport and give students the opportunity to put what they learned into practice.
We can develop a short after-school rugby program, for example, 6–8 weekly sessions of approximately 60–75 minutes. Students progressively learn passing, running, evasion, teamwork and touch-rugby skills, with the program culminating in a fun Rugby Festival or small-sided tournament. This gives students who are particularly interested in rugby an opportunity to continue learning and playing after the school day.
